A is collection of songs dedicated to the memory of Alex Thomas-Haug. Recorded at Sound Extractor Studio in Edmonton, Ash Mountains explores the tension between past and present. From the opening guitar line of “Guilty” through to the tranquil longing of the closing song “Blue Summer,” the tone is established but kept adventurous. There are many paths that lead out from what Thomas presents here and she seems capable of traveling any of them with flourish and poise. There’s a definite sense of longing to this record – the EP was written partly in tribute after the loss of her brother Alex, to whom Ash Mountains is dedicated – but we also hear the resilience of a vibrant voice just starting to realize what it’s capable of. The EP was released at the end of August, just weeks after Thomas performed on the main stage at the 2013 Edmonton Folk Music Festival for an audience of 20, 000 people (a set in-between Charles Bradley and Feist, no less). Shortly thereafter the album reached #4 on the CKUA charts.
