In the tradition of ambiance-evoking movie scores by Tangerine Dream, Popol Vuh, and Cliff Martinez, the soundtrack to the forthcoming documentary film LUIS boasts hypnotic guitar and keyboard arrangements designed to create and enhance a variety of feelings spanning the spectrum of human emotion (love, joy, loss, anger, redemption, etc). Led by film-making six-stringer Tom Hanicak (on Martin acoustic and electric Fender Stratocaster) and fronted by his 17-year old vocalist son, Jake, the Cleveland quartet probes anxiety on "Tension," explores suffering and salvation on "Seattle" and "Night" (Allison Mori on background vocals) and embraces positivity and change on “Mood” and "Jupiter" and the elegant, up-tempo instrumental “Proper.” Drummer Dave Gretick contributes the introspective solo piano piece, "Subtle," while bassist Pete Roche pins the bottom end on the ska-punk flavored "Ready" and grinding, streetwise rocker "Wesley." Hanicak and Roche have been writing and recording music together in Northeast Ohio since 1988. Drawing from a wide range of musical influences - Joined by drummer / keyboardist Dave Gretick in 2002, they demoed fresh, rock-oriented tracks and performed live at The Agora and The Foundry (formerly The Hi-Fi Club). Bringing massive percussive chops and years of stage and studio savvy from his tenure in Chicago-based outfits, Gretick anchored the mix, shaped the new compositions, and kept Hanicak / Roche on their game with his superior skills. The group benefited from a musical blood transfusion in 2014 courtesy the younger Hanicak, whose vulnerable lead vocals amplify the angst on “Night” and “Seattle” while spinning “Wesley” and “Ready” into pugnacious, mosh pit-ready anthems with his feisty delivery. The self-titled album marks the first in-studio venture for the Vasenhouse Productions band; all tracks were recorded and mixed by James Kananen at Bad Racket in downtown Cleveland, with spiritual support from his ever-present pooch, Dorothy (aka Frog-Face). LUIS the film will premiere in Spring 2015. The documentary chronicles the life of Luis, who—at age 10—crossed the border to escape a troubled childhood and to take advantage of the educational opportunities in America. Luis faces language barriers, homelessness and multitude of life changing experiences while making his way through his senior year of high school.
