Started like most bands, by a bunch of idealistic if somewhat wary musical adventurers, Afterimage came out with a roar on the burgeoning Los Angeles music scene in 1980. Guitarist A Produce answered a local ad from Rich Evac (bass) and Holland de Nuzzio (drums) and found a dynamic rhythm section. When he brought vocalist and saxophonist the chemistry was right and a sound was forged. Afterimage used its "thunderous rhythm, threatening bass, wailing bursts of sax and haunted vocals” to create powerful brain and body music that tore through the Los Angeles music scene. In 1981 they released a 7” single and a 12” Fade In ep and thrilled fans at local L.A. clubs such as the Whisky, The Hong Kong Café, Club 88 and the Brave Dog, sharing the stage with the likes of Suburban Lawns, Savage Republic, Middle Class and Johanna Went. The chemistry changed sometime in the mid 80s and the original band members chose to follow their own interests, while singer Daniel Voznick (aka Alec Tension) continued write and record as Afterimage. With the help of conspirators from all over Los Angeles, this slowly mutating entity released songs on several compilations and in magazines, a 7” single and most recently, on 2 CD releases: “Ghostlight” and “Radio Sky.” A Produce started Trance Port and has released many solo recordings of ambient/trance music. Rich Evac and Holland de Nuzzio have retired from music. The latest release, “Strange Confession” brings together all the early, out of print releases with rare live tracks sporting “enough guitar backbeat to support the Sex Pistols,” to CD for the first time. It also offers alternative versions of songs from Ghostlight: “Ashes of Love,” written by Voznick/Produce for a Produce’s album “The Clearing,” and “Out of Breath” from the “Viva Los Angeles II” compilation from Italy. The final cuts are from the “Radio Sky” CD. There have been many members of Afterimage over time. The original band members included were Daniel Voznick (aka Alec Tension) on vocals and sax, A Produce- guitar and keyboards, Rich Evac- bass, Holland deNuzzio- drums. "Strange Confession" comes with annotated notes regarding the band, plus several rare photos of the band in performance. Notes by A Produce: Before my explorations into space/ambient music began, I was, like hundreds of others in Los Angeles at the time, in a band, playing guitar and keyboards. The band was called Afterimage, and the time was the early 80’s. It was the time of a new generation of bands and music in general, the likes of which had not been seen since the late 60’s. Punk music arrived in the mid to late 70’s with the Sex Pistols and the Ramones leading the pack, having a great influence over the music scene in Los Angeles. However, Afterimage was never a punk band, thus it got labeled a “post-punk” band along with other “atmospheric” bands at the time such as Echo & the Bunnymen, Joy Division, the Cure and Public Image (all English bands). Afterimage did have a European-style to its sound which had difficulty getting noticed on the local L.A. scene what with all the other punk band activity going on at the time. Still, we made our mark by recording a single and an EP in addition to playing a myriad of clubs around town at the time, along with other bands on the current music scene. The original master tapes of our recorded sessions and live recordings have languished in obscurity for over 25 years now. There have been previous attempts to re-issue these recordings but, for one reason or another, those attempts have never been realized. With the recent renewed interest in early 80’s “post punk” (now sometimes referred to as “early Goth”), I feel strongly that the Afterimage recordings now deserve an official release, thus the release of “Strange Confession,” a compilation of the original band’s tracks plus some tracks from how it evolved afterwards, even beyond my own participation in the band. In addition to “Strange Confession,” Afterimage has released two additional CD’s with other members at the time: “Ghostlight” (1996) and “Radio Sky” (2000). Included in “Strange Confession” are some tracks from those CD’s representative of the sound of the original band. Both CD’s are also available on CD Baby. My path to space/ambient music was a gradual one—one can hear inklings of it in some of the original Afterimage tracks; others may hear it in my transitional LP “The Clearing” (1988), portions of which have been released on other space/ambient albums of mine—in particular, “White Sands” and “Black Sands.” On “The Clearing” LP, singer Dan Voznick and I collaborated again on one track (which appears on “Strange Confession”) entitled “Ashes of Love.” This truly was a crossover track for me as it actually was a “song within a song,” one of my early explorations into the space/ambient realm. For those interested, there are plans to re-issue “The Clearing” in its original form at a later date. In the meantime, the best of that LP can be found on the two “Sands” compilation albums along with the track that Dan and I did which appears on “Strange Confession.” I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the spirit of those early 80’s times which is why I think it’s important that these re-mastered tracks be issued and heard again after so many years. At the same time, though, I have also enjoyed the musical journey over the years to other sonic realms that began with “The Clearing” and “Reflect Like a Mirror, Respond Like an Echo” and still continue to this day. Finally, a disclaimer to those who are more familiar with my recordings over the past 15 or so years: this album may not be quite your cup of tea; on the other hand, for those listeners who enjoy space/ambient music but don’t mind occasionally rocking, this one might be an enjoyable surprise, a time trip back to the early 80’s, especially for those who also enjoyed other “post punk” bands mentioned above. Although those were the bands Afterimage was heavily influenced by and took many of its musical cues from, we still managed to do our sound “L.A. style,” which turned out to be a style unique beyond those bands we at the time were influenced by.
