Lunch Music is a set of pieces for voices, percussion and live electronics, inspired by the notorius book Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs. It was originally composed for the dance-opera of the same name performed by Club Guy and Roni (directed by Guy Weizman and Roni Haver), Slagwerk Den Haag and Silbersee, that toured The Netherlands in the season 2013/2014. The concept of the music revolves around the idea of the polyphony of voices found in the book Naked Lunch. The voice deconstructed on the one hand into pure sound, and on the other hand into text encoded in the music. The effect of one voice speaking through another is often used, the live electronics controlled by the percussionists and the voice of the singers, modulates source material such as the voice of Burroughs or pop songs from the 60's. Just as in Burroughs' work, the voices in this piece are transmitting through interchanging persona, and are often presented through some form of disembodiment. Influential in the development of this approach for the piece was Ian MacFadyen’s essay The Mouth Inside: The Voices of Naked Lunch, where he draws up a list of vocal states that are invoked in Naked Lunch: key words such as: Merging, Mouthing, Ventriloquizing, Shapeshifting, Desanitizing, Elegizing, Telegraphing are characteristics that are taken into the music. The text created for the piece is made in the spirit of Burroughs, it is a cut-up of sorts, but using computer aided statistcal analysis. List of words were compiled using word frequency analysis of the different chapters of the book; where the list of words are presented in order of most to least used. These are used both in the text of the singers but are also sometimes encoded in the fabric of the percussion score. In this way a peculiar type of statistical reading of Naked Lunch occurs, one which the vocabulary and colour of the original work is captured, while the original narrative is fractured and re-configured.
