My second effort on disc, IBERO-AMERICAN SNAPSHOTS, is a beautifully eclectic musical trip taking us through Spain, Brazil, Cuba and Argentina. The music is diverse in tempos, rhythms, melodies and moods but with an excellent flow from start to finish. There are two pieces recorded for the first time on records by Cuban guitarist composer, my colleague and friend, Teresa Madiedo. "Sonete" is a great miniature using the traditional son montuno rhythm from Cuba with some harmonic spice in some spots while her "Contrasue~no" displays her own way with jazzy chords and restless dance-like atmosphere in the outers sections with a short but very lyrical middle section. As always, the New Tango music of Astor Piazzolla continues to be among the greatest highlights of modern music from the second half of the 20th century represented with "Oblivion" and "Milonga sin Palabras" - versions with clarinet and violin respectively. Never before recorded solo piano works by the late Cuban composer- pianist-bandleader, Rene Touzet are presented here with his "Un Dia Soleado" (A Bright Sunny Day) and his zesty and vibrant Danza Impromptu #1. From Brazil, I picked some pieces by two of this country's greatest masters-composers. I absolutely love the music of the late Baden Powell and one of his childhood guitar idols, Garoto. A serenade and a waltz Brazilian style representing Baden Powell and a nice bright classic samba "Lamentos No Morro" by Garoto. Leo Brouwer and Maximo Diego Pujol continue to be at the very top of the best composers of guitar music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Special thanks for my wonderful musical guests, clarinetist Jany Serrate Benitez and violinist Beatriz Vera for their great work on the Piazzolla pieces.
