SugarQube Records is following up its debut release with a collaborative mixtape featuring hip hop emcees and producers from the Next Level USA Global Exchange Program. “Next Level A Family Affair: Volume I” is a hip hop mixtape featuring beats and rhymes from Next Level artists from around the globe. This collection of 10 tracks features artists who have participated in Next Level’s artist initiatives in Bosnia, Serbia, Tanzania, Thailand, El Salvador, and India. The goal of the Next Level program is to build conflict resolution skills by creating a universal music experience using the language of hip hop. The program is a partnership between UNC Chapel Hill’s Department of Music and the US Department of State. Next Level does not only enlist a talented ensemble of global MCs as a part of its roster, but the initiative also includes break-dancers, DJs, beatmakers and graffiti artists who are immersed in hip hop culture. The Mixtape’s extensive tracklist includes artists who have participated in the program both from the US and countries abroad. The mixtape opens with a track called “Represent” by Next Level Bosnia alum DJ PlainView. Other Next Level alumnus who offer tracks to the album include Teao Sense of Next Level Tanzania, RyNea Soul and Dumi RIGHT of Next Level Thailand, Korin Wong Horiuchi of Next Level India, Charles Burchell and DJ Dan Tres Omi of Next Level El Salvador, and Next Level Senegal’s Toni Blackman and Tikey The Lighter. Shorlette and shirlette of SugarQube Records pitched the idea of creating a collaborative mixtape to Next Level Director Mark Katz earlier this year. Katz was in immediate support of the concept. He says, “Next Level brings hip-hop artists together from around the world to promote creative self-expression, mutual understanding, and conflict reduction. But just as important, it creates community, and this mixtape is a testament to the bonds it has created, from continent to continent, community to community, and person to person.
