Review From ELLENWOOD: Boston quartet Mars is a welcome relief, a breath of fresh air in a scene stagnated by self-serious cool and ironic detachment. Mars’ new EP, Everything You Want and Need, is a throwback to the “feel good” indie rock of Teenage Fanclub and The Replacements, while also recalling the more plaintive, introspective moments of Nick Lowe and The Rolling Stones. Bridging the gap between ‘60s song structures, ‘70s riffs and ‘80s college rock jangle is the primary drive for Mars on Everything You Want and Need, and the result is a glorious stew of all the bands and influences that have inspired Mars their entire lives. Despite the easygoing vibe, the lyrics actually allude to darker subjects, explains the band. “One of the themes of Everything You Want and Need is the decline of places in the mid-west like Detroit. The song “Dirt to Sand” is about this sad decline of a once-formidable city. “Blue Sky Glory” takes on several aspects of our times; the decimation of the middle class, our current wired lifestyle, and a longing for a more innocent past.”
