NOTE: NUANCED VOICE, UNWAVERING TUNEFULNESS AND THE RESULTANT APPEAL "Destined for greatness...A maestro in the making from Varanasi." writes the ace music critic MR. PRAKASH WADHERA in THE HINDU, New Delhi (INDIA) (Nov 23, 2001). Further adds, "Debashish Dey poised to leave his mark on the sands of time...The quality of his heart, nuanced voice, unwavering tunefulness and the resultant appeal hatch too sweet a conspiracy to be resisted." Similar was the impression of the icon of music criticism MR. RAGHAV R. MENON in THE TIMES OF INDIA, New Delhi (December 29, 1994.) "A new star appears on the horizon. Listening to young Devashish from Varanasi was thought provoking and had a special pleasure." Born on 26th April 1964 in a music loving family of Varanasi, Devashish received his initial trained under the tutelage of Pt. Pashupati Nath Mishra, a stalwart vocalist of Banaras Gharana, Later he underwent intensive and rigorous training with the erudite exponent vocalist Pt. Mukund V. Kalvint, who in turn assimilated his enormous repertoire from Padmabhushan Pt. S.N. Ratanjanker of Agra Gharana and from Pt. Rajabhaiya Puchwale, a torchbearer of Gwalior Gharana. In fact, Devashish has interwoven the silken threads of these three leading Gharanas of Hindustani vocal music to evolve a fascinating and harmonious style of his own. Devashish won some coveted prizes at a very tender age. Gifted with an extremely melodious and sonorous voice, which supremely glides across three octaves with mellifluous ease, Devashish holds the audience in admiration. Some rave reviews are: "His voice is sonorous and self gathered. It countenances no cramp, strain or break in any pitch. It enjoys an unencumbered, easy go approach. It knows no harshness. Besides its natural quality, it can enter the narrow crevices of the melody without much ado". The Hindu "Fine range of Dey. His voice is fresh and open. It was as though there were no secrets, no holding back, no inhibitions or restraints." The Hindustan Times Devashish Dey's renderings display a blend of impeccable Ragdari & flight of emotional imagination. Thus he is an enduring favourite for audiences all over as he has been featured in the prestigious music concerts in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Bhopal, Agra, Jaipur, to name a few, and won the acclaim of discerning critics. Not only in country, he has performed in many cities of UK, FRANCE, SPAIN and GREECE of Europe and got loud applause there. He is B.Sc. (Hons. in Physics) from Benaras Hindu University. Devashish Dey is equally good in semi classical renderings. His Bhajans are full of aesthetic depth. Besides being a brilliant performer he has presented own compositions in a shape of a book. “Swatah Sfoort Swarachit” and taught many students from all over the world. The central theme of this quite a long spiritual number says: Thou I remember earnestly, thy art my Master. Track 2:- Raga Chandrakaush- In Indian Classical Music, each Raga has been given a time of the day when it is most revealing, expressing and powerful. The midnight Ragas are deep, introspective and perceptive towards one’s inner self. This number reflects it perfectly. Track 3:- Bhajan Tulsidas- Bhajan is a divine chant which is purely devotional and aesthetic. This Bhajan is written by Tulsidas the great Poet of medieval India and composed by Devashish Dey himself.
