Shava is the phenomenon of five ”goras” or white guys from Helsinki who started playing Bhangra music. Bhangra is a joyful type of dance music originating from the villages of the Punjab region in North India and is essentially folk music, music of the people. The members of Shava were always lovers of the hard-hitting Bhangra beats, but were not satisfied with making just a pastiche of Indian music. They wanted to create something of their own, and out of their knowledge of the folk and popular music of their native Finland and the serious effort they had made to master Indian music spending long periods of time learning from the music gurus in India, they created a new genre called Suomibhangra, Finnish Bhangra. The fusion of recognizable elements of identity and culture from two different origins, from the band’s native Finland and distant Punjab, results in a musical synthesis that is both local and global.
