Listening to "Mixed Signals" is like taking a trip through Devin Tait's head, filled with memories of his favorite '80s albums, his triumphs and heartbreaks, and the words and sounds of his closest friends, the Traitors. From the heavy electro-beat of "All Mixed Up," which serves as the albums theme song, to the optimistic closing anthem "Quitters Never Win," Tait & Co. keep it upbeat, energetic and heartfelt throughout. Vocalist Liana Hernandez is featuring on the driving pop-rock of "Someone You've Never Met," but really shines on her self-penned tune "Burn." Jarod Millsap, the band's third vocalist, gets his turn on the twee "Sprinkles." Brandon Strecker, who is also the driving force behind Turbo Sunshine and S No S, adds the low-end with his bass guitar on most every track, really kicking some butt on tracks like "Mindframe" and "Speed Dating." VJ Myles Matisse, who can usually be found behind the DJ booth at bars and clubs all around Los Angeles, is the true backbeat of the band. While many contemporary pop acts rely on drum machines and programs, the Traitors always have live drums keeping the pace. Contributions from guitarist Ronnie Hendershott on guitar add a level of complexity to tracks like "Suckerpunch." This is an album to crank up and dance along to.
