简介
BIOGRAPHY I was born in Spain, and grew up in Sweden and England; my father is from Cádiz, my mother is Dutch with Caribbean roots. This somewhat complex starting point has been enriching, but on occasion a little confusing. Somehow, music helps me put things in their place, myself included. I started, like so many singers, in the school choir. Then, singing lessons. For a few years, anything to do with singing and songwriting was put on the back burner while I went to university and settled in Madrid. After university, it was such a relief to get back to music. First, jazz standards, then backing vocals. I worked with all kinds of Spanish-speaking artists: Sergio Dalma (incredible but true), Javier Álvarez, Cristina Rosenvinge, Diego Vasallo, Jorge Drexler, David Broza... My first album, Orégano, was published in the US and Argentina, regrettably not Spain. I toured in the States and South America, and the CD gave me considerable joy, among others, being included in the Chicago Tribune´s 2006 listing for 10 Best Latin Albums of the Year. It also won the Independent Music Award for Best Latin Album in 2006. Chocolate and Roses, my second album, was released in the US and Spain in 2008. Thanks to this CD I licenced tracks in TV commercials - which has made it possible for me to produce my new album - and my song Paradise was number 1 on iTunes USA in March 2008. Interesting fact: this CD was also released in South Korea. Could that be where I really belong? My new album, Sopa de almendras (Almond Soup), is fresh out of the oven. I produced the first 2 with wonderful musician Leo Sidran. This time around the also very wonderful Matías Cella was in charge of the production. This album is a considerable change of course in a number of ways. First of all, no electronica. It is 100% accoustic. There are lots of string arrangements, also Spanish, accoustic and electric guitars, pianos, percussion and drums, thanks to the good offices of Sebastián Merlín, Miguel Ángel Rodrigáñez, Juan Albéniz, Ramón Leal, Leo Sidran, Matías and yours truly. I really wanted a great deal of space on the album, just a few elements. I think we achieved this. And I also wanted to release my voice more. I have been working on my vocal technique for a number of years now (mainly Roy Hart and Kristin Linklater) and I like to think this has influenced my singing. I felt less afraid of making mistakes, more theatrical and embodied. The songs are the result of a year of writing, as if I had written a number of postcards about everyday life, the sun in my garden, the arrival of the autumn, the embarrassment of not doing things as well as I would like, the constant demands I make on myself, love, my grandmother and her almond soup... So, a year and a half´s work, intense, wonderful, sometimes frustrating, sometimes an enormous pleasure. I expect the record to see the light by mid-November (touch wood) both in Spain and the US. It will boast a beautiful cover by artist Valérie Zylbersztein, a collage with an air of the nostalgia of the past that is present in some of the tracks.
