“Fresh Aire” was conceived as part of a larger process in which the Aires took recording to a new level in the group’s history. Instead of spending their annual Spring Tour enjoying exotic beaches and tropical fauna, the Aires retreated to California in 2010 to record the majority of the album’s tracks, the remainder of which were recorded prior to the trip and after commencement. The recording, however, would not have been possible had the Aires not constructed D’Artagnan, a mobile recording booth fashioned from PVC piping, duct tape, and packing blankets. WIth D’Artagnan at their side, the Aires worked to produce an album that captured not only the group’s broad repertoire, talented soloists, and skillful arrangements, but returned to the quirky and comedic glory that has been a trademark of the group’s performance for ages. The Dartmouth Aires were founded in 1946 as an off-shoot of the Dartmouth College Glee Club, from which they then split in the late 1970s. The Aires have since established themselves as an independent Dartmouth landmark known for their musical excellence, high-energy performance, and dedication to College tradition. The Aires are one of the nation’s most acclaimed all-male collegiate a cappella groups, having won several competitions for album recordings as well as live performances. The Aires are a set of about sixteen to eighteen members from across class years and represent all corners of campus. They arrange all of their own music and perform regularly on- and off-campus for students, College organizations, private audiences, and alumni groups. And, of course, ERRH!
