This recording, released in 1998 from this Swiss free improvised/electro-acoustic duo, comes highly recommended to the curious listener of avant-garde music. From as early as the mid-'70s, this project focused on extracting music from everyday electronic appliances, altered and modified toys, radios, and other such devices. They are employed in their atonal symphonies which they approach with the craft and ear of master free jazz musicians. While some of their previous recordings as a duo and in collaboration with the New York group Borbetomagus have been explosive and noisy affairs, Infra Red is an incredibly subtle and reduced study of micro-sound interplay and instrument invention that stands above many of the conceptual electronica recordings of the decade.
