Post-rock is generally defined as having no vocals, and for the majority of their work The Echo Chamber fits that bill. Their very occasional use of vocals doesn’t take away from the massive soundscapes that they lay down on the majority of their newest album Synesthesia. Picking up where bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Explosions in the Sky leave off, Fort Collins’ The Echo Chamber certainly make long strides between this release and their 2012 debut EP Vikings From The Future. While the band hasn’t changed their delivery or their overall direction much since that 2012 release, the music put forth on Synesthesia is much more engaging and approachable. It will take any willing listener on a journey, flying over vast expanses. It’s at times almost melancholy, and at other times, like on the track “Terrorvision” brutal and cathartic. And while the group is able to tap the yin and yang of emotions, they never lean too heavily on either side of the spectrum, and that diversity and ability to shift between moods and rhythms so effortlessly and quickly is what keeps Synesthesia consistently interesting and fresh.
