Villa-Lobos / Castro is the third album release by French Canadian, Latin Classical pianist Andree-Ann Deschenes. Sharma Searle of Toronto’s The WholeNote magazine praised her previous work extensively in 2016: “Deschênes captures the essence of saudade, tapping into an emotional connection to the material – you sense she’s both moved by it, yet at the same time, focused on the task at hand, technique crisp and clean…Deschênes’ disc is a gem. ¡Fantástico!” Coming off the critical reception of her second album, "Milhaud & Ginastera" – which earned Andree-Ann the Global Music Awards’ Silver Medal for Outstanding Achievement – "Villa-Lobos / Castro" is a perfect blend of classical technique and Latin American spice. The album features the music of Heitor Villa-Lobos and Juan Jose Castro, from Brazil and Argentina respectively, but also includes a special treat from Cuba; a special collaboration with renowned Cuban percussionist Calixto Oviedo, on a track composed by Jose Maria Vitier. Currently based in Los Angeles, Canadian-born Andree-Ann Deschenes has performed extensively across North America and Europe; her work has been heralded as “…Gorgeous, gritty, powerful, and traditional, all in one package” (The Music Farmer). Andree-Ann holds a Master of Music degree in Afro-Latin music from California State University in Los Angeles, and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Claremont Graduate University.
