As the third full-length album and seventh release from 75-year-old Portland-based ambient electronic music producer Roger Groendyke (a.k.a. Mister Chill’R), Ethereal Etudes is a truly heartfelt, angelic and sometimes even tear-jerking album that is wonderful to begin or end your day with. Co-produced entirely with Planewalker, Mister Chill’R takes a turn in this album with his musical style towards slow, luscious, relaxing soundscapes and gentle melodies carried by the soft timbres of piano, female vocals, harp, bells, guitar, and synthesizer pads, being even more downtempo and ambient than his previous offerings. Make yourself some tea, curl up with a book on the couch in your slippers and let yourself be serenaded by sweet, scintillating sounds of crystalline clarity. With just enough rhythm to carry the songs forward without disturbing the calm vibe, it is the perfect album for stress-relief or peaceful pondering at the times of day and night where high-energy music is just too much. The album begins with Cinematic Crescendo, a symphonic song that sets the tone and foreshadows the vast range of emotion that is to be expressed. It is followed by Seductive Siren, a healing, resonant tune that is positively joyous, carrying the album into the shining realms of light and staying there through the next five songs until the album takes a turn to a deeper vibe with minor keys in the eighth track, Welkin Wonders. What follows is a descent into the inner realms where feelings of all kinds flow, getting you in touch with all the parts of your inner self that you may have been neglecting. After going just deep enough to shake some tears loose, the album ascends back into the heavens with the fourteenth track, Midnight Meditations. The album concludes with Interlude Inspiration, a mysterious ending to the journey that will leave you in a sparkling world of fantastic fantasy, inspired and invigorated to continue onward with your heart open.
