Adaptation is a solid addition to what is fast becoming the niche of Canrap: brainy, organic and challenging hip-hop. Sun Media- Edmonton SUN Politic Live's new album, Adaptation, bucks hip-hop's worst stereotypes to deliver a sublimely produced and conscientious collection of music. 4 out of 5 VUE Weekly True to its title, Adaptation is something that grows on you, a second skin that you didn't realize that you were missing. Brockway Entertainment Adaptation manages to run the divide between mainstream and underground with solid production. SEE Magazine "Matinee" and "Block O" are so incredibly addictive that they can be worked to no avail; the more you listen to them, the smoother they get. 3 out of 5 HeroHill.com The production is solid and the MCing is high quality and covers topics many people can relate too. All I have to say is that U.S. emcees have some competition headed their way. 8.5 out of 10 PopMatters.com Politic Live's strengths are formidable. First, d**e beats. Second, catchy hooks. Third, and most importantly, the group exudes sincerity. 6 out of 10 JahWorks.org "Adaptation" has something everyone can relate to- whether it's being in love, getting in touch with your roots, or reminiscing of youth and a time when life was simple. ADAPTATION Rhyme & Reason Executive Summary featuring Janaya Ellis As we did with Notoriety, we introduced Adaptation by taking a look at what has brought us to this moment in time. What’s different this time around is we decided to not have it as a spoken word piece, but to make it a song. Throw Back When we chose this beat we had the heads in mind. With the album having a heavy Reggae influence, we knew we had to make a song that would speak to heads. The Matinee “The Matinee” is the song that introduced the nation to Politic Live and Music For Mavericks Entertainment. After the video began to get spins and started to chart on MTV Canada, it opened a lot of doors for us and made people outside of Edmonton inquire into what we had to contribute. The song is an anthem for all those that rep the Maverick’s Team, be they dead or alive. What’s It Gonna Take “What’s It Gonna Take” is a light hearted song in which we try to connect with a particular girl. The song describes three different instances with three different girls in three different situations. Ultimately, each of us is unsuccessful in our attempt for companionship with our respective girl. Purification featuring Singin’ D We wanted to bring a little culture to this album and remind our listeners our family is from Jamaica; a place of pride, strength and courage. The song reflects on up bringing as first generation Canadians with West Indian Parents, and Jamaica’s national heroes, and the hardships facing the country and the world in general. Enough featuring Kreesha Turner There is nothing like a teenage love. It’s so innocent and has so many firsts. We all remember wishing it would never end but its end is as certain as death. I’m sure we all have our stories. Spider Hill featuring Alex MacDermott In this song, we look back at our past reflecting on the joy and pain of our childhood. The song details things in our lives that shaped who we are today. Spider Hill refers to a hill in the neighborhood we grew up in where we could escape and be kids. Block O featuring Oozeela “Block O” was written as a tribute to the West Indies. The song looks at the history, culture and tradition behind Block Parties, while providing a hip-hop twist. Video Light featuring Risse Gritie was inspired to write this after shooting the video for “The Matinee”. After meeting the girls in the video he wondered what their struggle must be like. Stoosh featuring Oozeela “Stoosh” is a song about girls who are so high on themselves that nothing is good enough for them. In the song we take a comical look at three difference circumstances of girls who act Stoosh. Tai Chi RMX featuring Oozeela From time to time we become bogged down with work and other commitments and responsibilities. At some point we all need a break. At some point we all just want to escape. Travels with Akeem featuring JJ Heaven “Travel’s with Akeem” was inspired by previous experiences Arlo’s had with cab drivers. He wanted to compose a song that would bring to life both the harsh realities of society and how we’ve short-changed a lot of our greatest intellects. Droppin’ Gems featuring K-Riz This is hip-hop in its rawest form. Heavy hitting beat and dynamic flows. In The End This song was more of a question we felt we had to ask ourselves. Late nights, performances, practices, studio sessions, road trips -- all the things that we do as independent artists, what are we striving for in the end? Is it money, artistry, sex, respect, family, friends or out of some selfish need to be in the spot light. Block O RMX featuring Rochester a/k/a Juice, Shad, Jerys & Oozeela The remix for “Block O” came about after seeing the response the song was getting at performances. The song was something that many people from the West Indies and Africa could relate with. Initially we wanted to do two separate Remix’s; one for Africa and one for the West Indies, but we wound up doing just one. We really think the guest vocalists complimented the track. The Matinee RMX featuring K-Riz, Sly Slivers, Billy Blitz, & Oozeela “The Matinee RMX” was actually recorded before the original “Matinee”, which would technically make the original “Matinee” the real remix. Although the song first appeared on the Tuff House Record’s compilation The Cure, we went back in to re-record it for the album. This version has a live band feel which changed the dynamics of it. Just like the “original” the song is an anthem for all those that rep the Maverick’s Team, be they dead or alive.
