When asked what makes her different than other current hip hop artists on the scene, JZL respectfully replied that she tries to “stay away from vulgarity and negativity.” JZL dabbled in the ever common hip hop style during her college years at Howard University, but she quickly realized that she wasn’t stretching herself as an artist. The Empress emphasized her desire to “make music that everyone can enjoy from [her] family to the kids [she] motivates,” as another reason why she is dedicated to taking a path different from the one more traveled in the hip hop community. The JZL Experience merges the likes of Left Eye, Missy Elliot, Kanye West, and Drake with a blend of 90’s Pop and R&B. As a songwriter, JZL writes all of her own lyrics and even writes for other R&B, Pop and Gospel artists. As the “Empress of The DMV”, a woman of this caliber can only uplift the community in the coming decades, and the world is excited to see where this budding star will go next.
