Later taking up synths, he studied Jazz piano for 3 years at Ogilvy Music School before continuing on his own. In the late '90s, he produced and recorded 2 self-released cds, the first of which, Decapolis-the River, won an ASCAP special award in 1998. Roden's recording style is somewhat different than that of most others because most of his music is improvised and recorded live to 2 track, sometimes requiring many takes for each piece.
