简介

Singer-songwriter Emma Guzman, looks to set settle into her own with the release of her second album "Roots." Having self-released her first album "Echo" under the name Emma Islands in 2015 and emboldened by the positive response received by Echo, Emma made the decision this year to drop her alias and face the world as none other than herself. Described by the Detroit Metro Times as a "song writing prodigy" and one of their top 15 artists to watch in 2016, Emma Guzman is slated to release her sophomore album on May 13, 2017. At a time when mainstream music feeds us a steady diet of copy and paste recording, industry formatted song formulas, and processed, nondescript lyrics, Emma Guzman has amassed an assortment of raw and organic songs full of allegorical wisdom. With equal doses of virtuosity and sincerity, “Roots” intends to cleanse the musical palate of that commercial fast food aftertaste we cannot seem to shake. "Roots" will be released on Backburner Records. The label has been on hiatus in recent years as Kelly and Nikki Keneipp thought they were done releasing and promoting music, but hearing Guzman, a wildly-talented 14-year-old songwriter from Detroit, quickly changed their minds. "Roots" was recorded over the past year in fits and starts. Using minimal frills and having no bankroll, the album relies heavily on Emma's lyrics and her unflinching commitment to the dual crafts of writing and performance. Late at night in a dive bar on the mean streets of Athens Georgia circa 1998, Backburner Records was brought to life by Kelly and Nikki Keneipp with the help of longtime partner in crime Jack Logan. After a short stint as Lo-Fi darlings, which resulted in 4 star reviews from Rolling Stone, and TV appearances on the Today Show and Conan O'Brien things came to screeching halt, replaced by boy bands, overnight viral sensations and auto-tune. As a result, what started out as a vain attempt to kick start their own musical relevance and create an atmosphere free from the opinions of those in the musical "know", where they could release music free from the chains of common sense and rational thought, somehow evolved into a serious outlet for many Georgia based musicians. Before moving home to Nikki Keneipp's native Michigan, the Backburner team released albums by The Possibilities, Cafeteria, The Roach Bros, Rob Veal, Dave Barbe, Jack Logan, Vic Chestnutt and more. Having put the label on the literal Backburner, Mr. and Mrs. Keneipp were beguiled by the charms and constant nagging of Emma Guzman, finally giving in to her demands and agreeing to release "Roots" on Backburner.
