Performed by Saints Analogue Written by Jem Finer and Shane MacGowan It was on a long commute between Alpine and Wimberley that our singer, Phil Marshall, a Yorkshireman, decided to break the monotony and play the role of band van DJ. Among the tunes he selected, was 'Fairy Tale Of New York' by The Pogues, an Irish punk band who popularized the brutally honest story of two Irish immigrants suffering their first miserable Christmas together in NYC. It's a huge song to this day in the UK. And while the rest of us remembered it, it seemed like it has been off the radar here in the States for so long that it was almost a new listen for the three of us Yanks. We all immediately recognized the brilliance of the arrangement and story of the song and began spitballing ideas of how we could perform the song in a way that represented what we are and at the same time, create a track to benefit a charity that endorses the best ideals of the holiday season. We've done more sessions together than we can recall and supported so many artists working at yellow DOG. The song needed elements we don't carry in our band and began to scour the list of players we've worked with. We needed fiddle and a soulful rockin' female voice for Phil to duet with. It was an easy choice! Cody Braun and Barbara Nesbitt have done an absolute ton of session work with us on many albums. They are as much yellow DOG family as the four of us and working with them in this format was an absolute blast.
