简介

Seasons of the Veil is an oratorio based on poem fragments by the classical Roman writer Petronius, who committed suicide in 66 A.D. to avoid execution by Nero. Petronius is best known for his epic novel 'Satyricon,' which examines the deformations and carnal obsessions of the super-privileged in ancient Rome. Petronius's poems deal with similar themes - love, lust, betrayal, false religion and the war between rich and poor. The writings which make up the text for 'Seasons of the Veil' resontae with personal and collective suffering. They speak of the betrayal of love, the anguish of night and beatitude of a new day. Composer Frank Garvey created 'Seasons of the Veil' in 1995-96, as a multi-media performance for his industrial -operatic ensemble DeusMachina. It features the OmniCircus installation - a surreal red-light district with musicians, dancers, and robotic performers, including Goboy the robot beggar, Plowgirl the robot junkie, Godfella the robot street-preacher and Humper the robot hooker. This 2 CD set contains both studio verion and a live recording of a 2001 performance. Below is the Latin text by Petronius and an English translation. Both versions are used in the oratorio, some parts more than once. Oppida bello qui quatit at fammis miserandas eruit urbes, tela videt versasque acies at funera regum atque exundantes profuso sunguine campos. Qui causas orare solent, ligesque forumque et pavidi cernunt inclusum chorte tribunal. Condit avarus opes defossumque invenit aurum. Venator saltus canbis quatit. Eripit undis aut premit eversam periturus navita puppem. Scribit amatori meretuex, dat adultera munus: et canis in somnis leporis vestigia lustrat. In noctis spatium miserorum vulnera durant. Sed sic sic sine fine feriati et tecum iaceamus osculantes. Hic nullus lavor est tuborque nullus: hoc iuvit iuvat et diu iuvabit: hoc non deficit incipitque semper. Review of A. V. A. - Fanning the Flames of Discontent OmniCircus's Seasons of the Veil ... depicts a charnel house of the living in a carnival from Hell. Garvey's paintings and sculptures are in the tradition of Rodin's 'Gates of Hell', Goya's 'Black Paintings' and Hieronymous Bosch's 'Garden of Delights'. Androids of the disappeared - homeless, prostitutes, junkies - live in the corners of our consciousness and in the cracks of a crumbling social order, their muffled cries a counterpoint to music that is spectral and soaring. Seasons of the Veil lifts the scrim on our collective unconscious, rudely refracting and magnifying the things we bury in order to keep afloat. Frank Garvey is the Barbarian at the Gate of the fortress-like art world that panders to and promotes effete, vacuous art. You can see why he is barred from it. OmniCircus, and Seasons of the Veil, are the works of a protean genius who will not be acknowledged by the art arbiters until they're downsized along with their culture and their class.
