Outside the Box – Jazz Journeys & Worlds Beyond, a double CD from recording artist, percussionist, composer and bandleader Ian Dogole (pronounced Eye-in Dough-gul), ventures into a musical universe that knows no boundaries. On this recording, listeners will experience an epic musical odyssey that traverses an ever-changing aural landscape – from original compositions inspired by the ancient Silk Road, the trance-inducing rhythms of the Sahara Desert and the passionate flamenco music of Andalusia … to new interpretations of timeless compositions by Alice Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Wayne Shorter, Thelonious Monk and Milton Nascimento … to improvisational treks into the shamanic realms of the Peruvian high Andes and beyond. Ian incorporates indigenous percussion instruments rarely heard in traditional Jazz ensembles, including the udu (Nigerian clay pot), cajon (Afro-Peruvian box drum) and dumbek (pan-Arabic goblet drum). On other compositions, Ian expands his percussive arsenal with the kalimba (East African thumb piano), talking drum (West African hourglass drum), hang (Swiss steel pan-derived instrument), balafon (West African marimba) and tongue drum. Some of the musical collaborators on this project have trekked with Ian across vast expanses of musical terrain for many years, including world-renowned woodwind virtuoso Paul McCandless, stellar bassist/flutist Bill Douglass and the brilliant pianist/arranger Frank Martin. Other contributors to this project include Peruvian shaman and multi-instrumentalist Tito La Rosa, Moroccan master multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Yassir Chadly, acclaimed bassist/composer Fred Randolph, woodwind maestro/composer Dave Tidball, saxophonist extraordinaire Michael Zilber, transcendent vocalist Deborah Winters and cross-cultural string wizard Eric Golub.
