Andy Morton is an established UK song writer who has contributed to the creative output of several bands -the cultish Slender Loris, the quirky Details and the mercurial Cafe Culture. He sees himself as a writer who, in his time, has written for TV and stage as well as publishing much short fiction and two short biographical studies of JRR Tolkien. But he is also a performer who works as a solo guitarist and singer in listening gigs but also goes hands-free with a variety of accompanists for the jazzier material. His songs have rich chordal structures and, often, haunting melodies underpinning carefully crafted lyrics. They often pay some tribute to the traditional American Songbook, and Jazz Ballads is an attempt to put them into this kind of rich twentieth century context. This CD features a handful of great British jazz musicians who have discovered and expressed rhythms and harmonies of their own in Andy's songs.
