The first track I recorded for this album was 'Universal Child' following a Newsnight report on the BBC TV network from Syria by presenter and reporter Jeremy Paxman. It was very moving seeing these thousands of children who were separated from their parents with no belongings. After writing the song I realised I had written a number of unrecorded songs about war and peace and sometimes songs with just titles and no lyrics, so I set about completing and recording them. The list totalled about seventeen songs and then I discounted some and wrote four new ones whilst my producer Anthony Galatis was on holiday! I have always imagined the whole album as a form of song and dance project hence the overture. I tried to get inside the heads of the characters who have experienced war first hand.
