The newest uSSSy recordings, published as "Unsharp Mask," come together with an interview in which Pavel Eremeev and Artem Galkin mention a strange kinship with Russia's garage or post-hardcore bands. They admit to feeling something of a "responsibility" before their audiences, who need to be led into a trance-like state. "I think it's useful for people who hear our music to have that experience. They can remove all of 'this' [around us], canceling everything that holds them down, and thus enter a kind of 'flow' instead." Some additional thoughts transpire: "Folks need to get totally involved [in that hard-won transcendence] and turn off their ego. When that finally happens, a person becomes really open [or fragile] - so you need to be especially careful he doesn't get hurt in any way." The geographic motifs that inform uSSSy's work, taken from "somewhere else," here become instead a view of mental or psychic duality. It's not a matter of borrowing sounds from beyond a domestic border, but instead delving into the other (suppressed) side of an individual. In order to investigate, yet somehow contain these darker forces, hard work is key. "We have to keep working and not get distracted. In a word, we've got to live like normal guys." Typical people in typical places are shaken by the same concerns and lingering fears: something terrible hides beyond the fringes of normality. The members of uSSSy - maybe jokingly, maybe not - have even been labeled "satanists" by a few people in the Russian web. Some spirits should not be raised.
