Laurel Canyon Boulevard is a canyon road that cuts through the Santa Monica Mountains, connecting the Westside of Los Angeles to the San Fernando Valley. Having spent equal time growing up on both sides of the hill, I was on this stretch of road a lot, especially once I got my driver's license. I would drive my 1988 Jeep Cherokee up Laurel Canyon from Ventura Boulevard, cut across Mulholland, down Coldwater Canyon, or vice versa. Any Angeleno worth their salt knows this route, and is well aware of the thrills both the road and the view provides, especially at night. Once you get to Mulholland Drive, pull over at Carl's Curve (pictured on the cover photo by the late, great Rick Corrales) and catch a look at the view. Driving the canyon roads is one of the many things I love about Los Angeles, my home. My EP 'Taking Laurel' is music inspired by that drive, late at night, the adrenaline rush from the blind, hairpin turns and serpentine curves, and the serenity of the city lights twinkling down below, the stars up above.
