On one of our Irish tours we made a point of visiting Kilkenny. We were keen to understand the reference made in the beautiful Irish song Carrickfergus, which says ‘there are stones there, as black as ink’. We discovered that it referred to the black flagstones, which are inlaid in the pavements. When it rains, these stones glisten like marble, hence giving Kilkenny its alternative name of Marble City. We want to make this reference by way of an apology to the fine people of Kilkenny for ‘demoting’ their city to Marble Town. Regarding the song ‘Lift This Weight’, many years ago Paul used to do a gig in Stoke on Trent where a guy named Jim would get up & perform one of his own songs. The chorus of the song has remained in Paul’s head & despite several failed attempts to track Jim down, Paul chose to write a new song keeping Jim’s chorus & melody. If you’re out there Jim…?
