Vasantrao Deshpande, unlike his colleagues, did not take to music in the conventional manner. Even though he started his music training in Nagpur at the age of eight (under the guidance of Shankarrao Sapre, the erudite exponent of Gwalior Gharana), finishing school remained his priority. After high school examination in 1938, he met Asad ali Khan and Ashak Ali Khan while traveling from Lahore to Varanasi with his uncle. He came to Pune at the age of 21 to start a job, and while there, had the benefit of being groomed under Pandit Suresh Babu Mane of Kirana Gharana (1942-52) and Ustad Aman Ali Khan (1950) of Bhendi Bazar Gharana.

From 1941 to 1960 Vasantrao not only learned music from Great masters but spent his time researching, experimenting, performing on stage and providing play back in movies with talented musicians such as Bhimsen Joshi, Kumar Gandharva, and P. L. Deshpande. This reflected in his style, a subtle fusion of many shining virtues from different contemporary "gayakis".

In 1965 he quit his job to dedicate his career to musicand his rise to popularity during the next decade can only be described as truly spectacular. He succeded tremendously as a Marathi stage actor, performer and researcher and was awarded a doctorate in Music and Natya Sangeet Academy Award and became the President of Natya Sammelan in 1982. He dies on Jyly 30, 1983 , while at the peak of his career at the age of 63.

His singing on this disc reflects his training from Master Dinanath, a great exponent of Marathi Stage. Vasantrao had the training as a tabla player and it is evident on this disc while he duets with the rhythm. This disc is unique because it is a proof of his comic side of the personality and his constant desire to communicate with the audience
