This 3rd solo guitar release, "A Journey Through Latin America," features compositions that will take the listener from the sounds of Southern Spain, to the pampas of Argentina and to the beautiful landscape of Colombia. Suite Colombiana No.1 by Gentil Montana is a work that reflects the composer’s knowledge of the folkloric forms of Colombian music combined with captivating rhythms, well-crafted counterpoint, and a rich harmonic language. The first movement, Embrujo (spell or curse) is written in the form of the pasillo which is a sort of waltz in 3/4 meter native to the Andean regions of Colombia. One typical aspect of the pasillo is the bass line of 2 eighth notes followed by half-note with a tie from the second eighth note to the half-note. The second movement, Paraiso Lejano (distant paradise) is written as a canción which is a Latin American song with a beautiful melody. This particular canción is typical of Gentil Montaña’s evocative melodic style written over rich harmonies. The third movement Rivereña is in the folkloric style of a guabina which is a song form found in the Andean regions of Colombia. Each guabina exhibits characteristics according to the various areas from where it is heard. The last movement, Julían is the most representative form of Colombian folklore, the bambuco. One of the major characteristics is the bass line which is made up of a quarter rest followed by two quarter notes which gives a syncopated feel in triple meter. The melody is typically in eighth notes which accentuates a duple meter over the bass line. "To my beloved homeland, the larger Tolima, to my dear capital, Bogotá, my life will I give you.
