What makes a record sound contemporary is when it taps into something that everyone is thinking about without them being aware they are thinking about it. D.O.G. by Old Gold is one of those records, and it sounds like Sex. Not some lounge jazz bullshit for sleazy wine-drinking yuppies who think that anal is a right instead of a privilege. You could have sex to this; but, you could just as happily get dressed to go out, or sit on the night bus going over the evening in your head. Even though watching porn and having sex are different things, both get you turned-on. So, what would it be like if someone made a record that achieved that: that got you stirring down there while you were stirring the tea. It would be pretty special right? D.O.G. is a pretty special track. Its lyric about how drugged-up girls are easy to sleaze on is delivered in a drawling croon that hits you right in the (Kenny) G-Spot. Add a clean and low electro funk bassline and vintage synth chords, and you've got a hit of sexual crack coc*ine. And then it wears off. And then you put it on again. I Was Up In Jail is a love song in the purest sense - a playful, swooning paean to a high school sweetheart, with crashing snare fills and an angular up-jump bassline that elevate it from its 1950's Lesley Gore peergroup and just make it timeless. It's short, but then what more is there to say? Old Gold is not a boy who minces his words. If you're looking for obtuseness, or some arty wank about the state of the world, then go somewhere else. He's from Berkeley, but grew up in Durham, NC and lives in NYC. He makes music on his laptop, and he watches a lot of porn. He also knows how to use his equipment, and not in just the musical sense.
