简介
Lauren Copley achieved considerable success in the 70s as a teenage singer and recording artist in South Africa, having several hit singles, receiving two Gold discs and representing her country at age 15 years at the 1973 Tokyo Music festival. With music critics describing her as a ‘rare happening in music’ and ‘the country’s most promising star’, Lauren became the youngest recording artist in South Africa when her debut record album 'Seven years older than four' was released when she was only 11 years old. In her teens, Lauren had several hit songs including 'Kentucky Blues', 'Flower of Life' and 'It’s too late now'. She worked with top South African musical talent including Mutt Lange and Trevor Rabin. At age 15 Lauren was selected as one of only 20 out of a thousand international singers to compete at the second Tokyo World Music Festival in Japan in 1973. Competing against other artists like Oliva Newton John, Lynsey de Paul, Mickey Newbury and Paul Williams, she received the Cherry Blossom merit award for her performance. Several of Lauren's songs were also released internationally in countries such as Germany, Holland and Japan. When she decided to quit singing as a career at age 20, thousands of her fans were dismayed. Despite being on the brink of international stardom, Lauren became disillusioned with the pressures of stardom, lack of privacy and commercial exploitation. Since then, her singing voice has largely been silent for decades, aside from a few limited performances. Now, 40 years later, Lauren’s distinctive, smooth voice can once again be heard on her first CD album, entitled Chrysalis. The release of the album follows repeated requests from many people who still remember and enjoy her music – and with the loving encouragement and support of her brother Bruce Copley - himself a talented multi-instrumentalist. He has enhanced many of the tracks with instruments including bamboo sax, harmonica and Vietnamese mouth harp. This title of the 14-track album Chrysalis is apt. It symbolises Lauren’s move from a successful young singer many years ago – lingering in a dark cocoon of silence – towards what many people anticipate will be the emergence of a harmonic butterfly. Like a really good wine, her voice has mellowed over the years, retaining its clarity and emotive quality in songs with beautiful lyrics and melodies that complement her laid back easy listening style. Chrysalis has been produced, mixed and mastered by award-winning South African producer and musical arranger JB Arthur. It features Lauren singing her own versions of lovingly selected favourite songs from the 70s and 80s by artists like Karen Carpenter, Barbara Streisand, Cliff Richard, Diana Ross and Rod Stewart, as well as some beautiful modern ballads by popular artists she admires like John Legend, Leona Lewis, Colbie Caillat and Gloria Estefan. The CD also contains contemporary re-recordings of her two Gold disc hits at the specific request of her nostalgic fans. She is quietly proud of her new album and hopes others will enjoy it as much as she enjoyed creating it.
