简介
Through the years I have had the good fortune of working with some of the finest musicians in the world without leaving in my hometown. Atlanta creates and harbors a huge variety of masterful players and writers that much of the world is unaware of. There is an unusual spirit of generosity, and donation of time and expertise towards musical projects that are creative and worthwhile. Most local professionals consistently support each other's efforts toward getting their work played and recorded, and this CD is a collection of such ongoing efforts. It was recorded over a 10 year span of writing, rehearsing and performing in a coalition known as Solid State. The tunes range from very specific multilayered arrangements such as Mud Day Holiday, to just improvisation over changes as on The Buffarilla. (The Buffarilla's voice is a chemistry lab gas valve with trumpet mouthpiece.) Some tunes are more polished than others, but I think that good playing and composition warrants inclusion, warts and all. At least for now. The study of music is a lifelong work in process; it's never finished and is infinitely challenging. This music was created for the purpose of expressing, learning and growing. It is not about perfection; exploration was the goal. Many wonderful players have worked in this group, and I sincerely thank each of you for your support and committment to the art of music. I'd like to especially thank Rick Bell and Bob Lewis, without whom the Discount Horns could have never been a reality, and Tim Larsen without whom there would be no record of any of this. Let's keep it up.
