I couldn't believe it when I found out that this band had only been together for a year, they are Tight, with a capital T. There is an assurance and confidence about their music that makes you feel comfortable, on safe ground, able to relax and let the music do its work. An awful lot of upcoming bands have some talent, some songwriting ability and some energy, but never enough of each. Enter Redlab, musically adept, with excellent melodies and lyrics, and tireless energy. Its usually overlooked when hearing a great band that they have put the hours in, practicing, honing and refining, to get the sound that a band make, rather than a group of individuals, so take a bow guys, your hard working enthusiasm is clear for all to see. Mikes vocal style is distinct, clear and powerful, with a great range. The rhythm from Pete and Rich working together on drums and bass work well together to produce a really fat and powerful backdrop to the vocals and guitar lines. Their music is energetic and drives on, theres no way you'll sit still listening to them. There is nothing added, and nothing taken away, you hear 4 musicians playing as 1, no unnecessary frills. Their track The Lift has some excellent guitar riffs, but not content with just a great riff or 2, Redlab move along as the track goes on, from a quiet acoustic intro, through the body of the track to a great instrumental climax. From the start, Title, another of their great tracks, lets you know you're in for some powerful music. Awesome lyrics, clear as a bell, mark this track out as a classic, with some wonderful melodies; this could well be an anthem for the band, as it quietens down then swells emotionally. Procession, the third track I will mention for now, shows just how great Mikes vocals are, and gives opportunity for Johnny Dorado (what a great name, eh) to let his guitar playing do the talking, sharp clear and flowing, without being flash. If I had my way I'd like to hear an instrumental version of this track, with Johnny let loose on it big time. Ive not heard or seen them live, but I can imagine that their shows would come across as effectively as their studio work, and when they get round to touring the U.K. Ill be first in the queue for tickets. Since every track starts with a clearly recognizable couple of bars, I can picture the fans going nuts as their hear each on start. If you are a musical elitist, get their new e.p. as soon as possible, because when they are huge you'll be able to say, yeah, told you so!
