Roma Sijam is a Roma hip-hop band from Belgrade, Serbia, composed by six young Roma members. Its existence is since 2010 and its members have been performing in various music events both in Serbia and abroad. The music they produce is a mixture of energetic traditional Romani music and variety of modern music styles. They have gained their musical experience in the organization called GRUBB, by taking part in different educational and autistics programs. During their tour in Canada, on the Montreal’s Jazz Festival, 2011, they received a notable confirmation about their music by receiving an award for “The most important musical event of the year”, sharing the first place with the music icon Prince. As members of the organization GRUBB, they also performed in Bitef Theater in Beograd, London 2011, Paris 2011, Montreal 2011&2012, Lincoln Center and DROM in New York 2012. Each member has its own specific artistic skills and as a product they offer and perform a unique show that besides rapping and singing it contains involvement of their own hop-hop choreographies, jam sessions, engagement with the audience, beat box and performance, all followed with positive energy and professionalism. Aim: Throughout their performance and produced music, the members of Roma Sijam not only aim to produce positive representation of the Roma community, tradition and culture, nonetheless their intention is to fight everyday discrimination and racism against the Roma. They strongly believe that by using the tools of arts and music in order to promote Romani arts and culture will contribute towards familiarizing Europeans with the Roma identity and overcome Romaphobia.
