Born out of an old warehouse studio in Cleveland Street, Sydney producer Elmntry threw together his Strangers EP in between sessions drinking, partying and squatting in Redfern earlier this year. "Despicable debaucharies" is how the young producer describes it. Combining elements of rap, grime and trap, the dark and odious mood of the EP was a result of the young producers life at the time. Unlike many local beat makers, Elmntry looked to shift away from an Australian sound and leans on a heavy grime sound while the deep vocal on "IDONTKNOWYU" is a straight "Word Up Detroit". Despite the dodgy origins Strangers contains some of the best Aussie beats we've heard in 2016. Noisey: What do you mean by despicable ‘debaucharies’? Elmntry: Without the debaucheries, the EP wouldn't have been possible. The EP did take a few months, but I am pretty happy with it! I was squatting in Redfern in Cleveland Street, working and living in a studio below a warehouse event space, so me and a couple of mates were making music everyday, drinking, smoking and partying when an event was on downstairs. It allowed me to meet some really cool people, and I’m really thankful for that experience. Who features on the EP? I contacted Black Napoleon online and he really vibed this one tune. Luckily he was originally from England so he is heavily into grime. I think his vocals really mesh it altogether. I’m inspired by grime and the darkness it brings. I think some Aussie producers are still really inspired by that local sound—synths and trap drums and female vocals—which is cool, but I was looking to move away from that on this release. ‘XXX’ is about as vague as it gets for a song title. I guess when you’re talking X-rated movies, you think of blood, guts, sex, drugs, horror—that was pretty much where I got the name from. I think the simpler the better. I really just wanted each track to have a really unique sound and definite concept. Hopefully that came through in the EP.
