Zone of the Interior is a rock band from San Diego, California. Its debut self-titled album features melodic vocal stylings reminiscent of alternative rock and metal while incorporating a widely-colored progressive rock, post-hardcore, and electronica accompaniment. Formed in late 2011, Zone of the Interior may be identified with a range of artists including Circa Survive, Tides of Man, Coheed and Cambria, Muse, and Incubus. Its freshman album is dynamic and has "something for everyone", with intense emotional tracks "Reliance" and "Harlequin Charade", assertive and confident songs "Not Without a Fight" and "Punisher", alongside an intricately-arranged pop track "Those Left Behind". Songs "What It Means to Be Alone", "Halation", and "Atrium" assess the philosophy of the human condition, its attachment to technology, and its introspective nature. "Awake While You Sleep", one of the album's more up-tempo and energetic tracks, provides a lyrical dream-state scenario with a complex musical backing. To top it all off, the album showcases shorter interlude tracks "Selah" and "Mass" to demonstrate the band's electronic prowess and diversity of sound and style.
