This song came out of the blue. I wanted to write a song with a one-word chorus, and I almost did it. A few people have said it sounds like Steely Dan. While I take that as a compliment, it was certainly subconscious on my part. And I look at it this way: If "Magnolia" is reminiscent of a forty-year-old song by an amazing group, I'm OK with that! I love what Frank Macchia did on the saxes on this. I told him I wanted him to play three solo riffs and then have the whole four-horn section play them, and that's what he did!
