简介
Momma Molasses is the stage name of N.C. based songwriter, Ellen "Ella" Patrick, who's music draws on a wide range of ideas, such as; Alt-Country, Appalachian Folk Music, Gospel, Piedmont Blues, Indie-folk, and Contemporary Roots Music. A devout believer in life's process, Momma Molasses adopted her name as a reminder to value "slowness", and place trust in the unfolding journey of experience. Originally from the Sandhills of North Carolina, Ella grew up singing gospel music in Church, and was inspired by her ballader Uncle to pick up the guitar at age thirteen. After high school she ventured off to the N.C. mountains, where she studied Old Time music, and Art at Warren Wilson College. Afterwards she played fiddle for Asheville based band, "The New Olde Fashioneds". While living in Asheville she worked as a painting instructor, maintained an art studio, participated in endless underground art shows, and played lots of noisy bar gigs. However, after experiencing a realtionship that developed into a domestic violence situation, she returned home to Carthage, N.C. to re-evaluate life. Back home she began to write songs, to help process her experiences, and reach some level of understanding. She also defined a unique "fingerpicking" guitar style, while frequenting open mics in the area. At one such open mic she met bassist Jordan Herrmann, who encouraged her to continue to write, and was a big help in producing this EP. The recordings here are a collection of tunes taken down between late summer of 2015 and winter/ spring of 2016 at defferent studios, and home recording situations, patched together for your pleasure. Recently, Momma Molasses has blossomed as a DIY musician performing in venues throughout N.C., circulating between the mountains, urban areas, and pine forests of her home town. www.mommamolasses.org
