简介
Chipego, a Zambian name meaning Gift. It is a name she grappled with till the day she realised it was hers to keep. Having grown up in South Africa didn't help. The name tended to be unfamiliar to those she introduced herself to. This was a time where the self-concept of being African was weakened by western influence. African stories and names were foreign to African kids. "Fast forward to today, I write best from the perspective of the African kid in training- like a young wandering spirit who must lear the craft of existing powerfully", says Chipego. ‘Keep on’ is a song signifying the beginning of many chapters, in a book of lost dreams and solved mysteries. The song was written in almost a heartbeat, on one of the hottest summer days in Joburg. There must have been nothing better to do than to write. The full song had been written in 30 minutes as a journal entry- a letter of encouragement from the perspective of a younger, more fearless self. She sang it back to herself, recorded a rough demo in her bedroom and sent it off to her good producer friend, Phonikz. They'd been making music for almost a year, due to chance, a random musical encounter. And so, after months of good music and even better conversation about all things life and living, it was a no brainer that he'd be the guy to bring the song to life. "I still remember finishing the record and feeling like we had made something so special", says Chipego. The opening line, “There was a world about me always, and if you stuck around you’d see it play out for me" reveals a storytelling aspect to the song which we love. Again, the song was originally a diary entry written on a hot day. So, naturally, the song feels like a summer's day with a good amount of promise, lifted off by a soulful base and a recognisable melody. ‘Keep on’ is the first of many song releases of Chipego's which hint to a greater story. "To say that I am inspired by the stories of life is an understatement."
