I love pop music in all of its guises. But as someone who doesn't do particularly well with either singing or writing lyrics, the guitar is my instrument of choice for expressing melodies. I also love the ambiguity of instrumental music. Listeners can hear and feel so many different things because of its abstractness. There is a stereotype that guitar instrumentals are merely vehicles for the performer to demonstrate chops. However, that is something I do my best to avoid. If I can't hum a particular phrase, I omit it from the song. In telling stories without words, harmony can be very effective to create drama. So my songs tend to change key frequently; sometimes as expected, while other times, not. As a classical guitarist by training, I often mix the sound of acoustic guitars with electric guitars, to create different textures and sonorities.
