Asheville, North Carolina based recording artist, Matt Williams, is best known for his ability to collaborate while remaining his own musical voice in the studio and on the stage. He has consistently evolved as a songwriter and musician since his debut album, "First Light" (2001), recorded when he was just 16 years old. From there, Williams recorded two additional studio albums, "Your Last Make-Believe" (2005), and "Particles Vol. 1" (2007); each exploring new concepts and styles. His musical beginnings as a solo live loop-sampling artist were documented with the release of a 2CD live record, "Ladies and Gentlemen" in 2004. Williams graduated college in 2008 with a degree in music from Western Carolina University, where he attended on full scholarship studying jazz improvisation with IAJE award-winner Pavel Wlosok, media production with Dr. Bruce Frazier (Law & Order, JAG, Quantum Leap), and jazz guitar with Steve Wholrab (Sister Sledge, The Temptations). Today, Matt Williams composes, sings, records and performs as a solo artist and with several projects; Tiny Boxes (Jam/Rock/Progressive), Zansa (Afropop/World), and The Ocean (Indie/Rock). His first solo record since 2007 is in production now, spanning the musical gamut from tight Pop/RnB to Hip-Hop infused Soul. Collaborating with notable fusion guitarist Bon Lozaga (Gong, Gongzilla) in Tiny Boxes, the blend of Matt's pop and jazz meets funky rock and roll with some progressive twists. The Ocean, a group formed to record MW's unreleased romantic rock concept album "Symphonies In Sea", mysteriously performs rather randomly, wearing masks and promoting with unorthadox methods. The rock trio is outfitted with a top-notch rhythm section featuring Sean Mason and Ryan Reardon of Vertigo Jazz Project who fulfill the same role with Williams in their lively Afropop ensemble, Zansa. Zansa (meaning "a blend") is fronted by 33rd generation djembe master, Adama Dembele, who leads their unique brand of West African music in a multilingual fashion, singing in French, English, and the dialects of his native Ivory Coast. In addition to his own musical efforts, he also performs with several of his colleague's groups like Josh Blake's Jukebox (Variety), Super 5 (Funk/Fusion), and is a violinist with HotPoint Trio (Gypsy Jazz / Hot Club Swing). Living and working in such talented circles, Matt frequently makes guest appearances. In various musical environments, Matt has performed with artists like Roy "Futureman" Wooten (Bela Fleck & The Flecktones), Fareed Haque (Garaj Majal), Ike Stubblefield (Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder), Grant Green Jr., Jeff Sipe (Aquarium Rescue Unit, Jimmy Herring Band), and Count M'butu and Kofi Burbridge (Tedeschi Trucks Band/Allman Brothers). Matt Williams is also a desirable producer, working with regional artists in all genre in his recording studio, The Eagle Room (Weaverville, NC). He is the founder and operator of Mended Heart Records, an independent recording label that is organizing a sound recording catalog for music licensing in the future. His label sponsored a recording project where Williams and assistant engineer, Tommy Maher recorded and produced a 14-band exclusive compilation album from scratch then donated all proceeds to charity through NC-based non-profit, Band Together raising thousands of dollars for local charities. Matt Williams was recently awarded a Grammy Certificate from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for his participation as Recording/Audio Engineer on Secret Agent 23 Skidoo’s collaborative track with Sugar Free All-Stars, “Cooperate” which was included on the 2012 Grammy Award-winning "Best Children's Album", an anti-bullying compilation called "All About Bullies: Big And Small." Tiny Boxes currently performs at regional festivals and Official Aftershow events with special guests like Jake Cinninger and Joel Cummins of jamband giants, Umphrey's McGee and bassist Ryan Martinie (Mudvayne/Korn). Zansa recently released their debut album "Zansa:Djansa" available now. Matt is also performing select solo looping shows in preparation for the new solo record where he will, once again, play all the instruments on the album.
