"Recorded largely in 2016 at Dreamland studios in Woodstock, in Upstate New York's Catskill Mountains, this is my first solo album. It's been a long time coming. Completing this album, with these people, is a dream come true for me. The material on the record journeys through multiple musical and imaginative soundscapes, and explores hope, passion, surrender, dreams, synchronicity, spirituality, shamanism and birds, among other things. Lyrically the songs emerged from my own experience of holding on and letting go, resistance and surrender, love and loss, confusion and inspiration, the search for some meaning and authentic connection in an apparently random and capricious world. Set to a groove though of course!. Dreamland is some kind of a story I think, but sets out in many different directions; as to where it ends up, who knows? As a dear friend of mine says, "life is a journey with multiple destinations". The album features three musical artists in particular: my beloved partner and collaborator on so many projects for three decades, the wonderful Annie Whitehead is on trombones, baritone horn and spoken word; my old friend from the David Sylvian band 'Praise of Shamans' days, the incredible David Torn is on electric guitars and loops, and the awesome Jerry Marotta plays drums and percussion. There's guest contributions from dear friends old and new, Mitt Gamon, Sam Brown, Paul Brady, Robert Wyatt, Dakota Lane, Sally Ann Triplett, Gary Dyson and Phil Saatchi. From the original Penguin Cafe Orchestra, my chums Steve Fletcher, Helen Liebman, Geoffrey Richardson, Peter McGowan and Liam Genockey. It was wonderful to work with the original Penguins again, and of course Annie was also part of that band. My sculptor friend Danny Lane also has a brief spoken cameo! The record was engineered by Matthew Cullen, Pete Caigan, Adam Armstrong, Mike Thorne and myself at Dreamland and Jersville in the US and Rim Shot, The Cabin and The Wipsy House in the UK. Matthew and myself mixed it on the amazing vintage API desk at Dreamland. Simon Heyworth mastered 'This Man is Dangerous' beautifully. The front cover art is an original piece inspired by the music called 'Refuge', created by my friend and Woodstock artist Lucinda Abra. The other images on the CD were created by Dakota Lane, also a friend and gifted Woodstock based artist. Dakota also collaborated on the spoken word sections of the album, appears on the track 'Here' and made a great 28 minute film during the making of the record.
