1906: Born in Manhattan. 1909: Future wife Molly born in Manhattan. 1918: First job, Odeon Theatre, selling candy. 1919: Writes first song, “A Toast to God.” 1921: Reads an article about songwriters and decides to become one. 1922: Meets Molly Ehrlich. 1925: First self-published pamphlet, “Hobo’s Union.” 1927: Marries Molly. 1928: Three of his songs, “Bowery Bums,” “The Bum’s Rush” and “Once a Bum, Always a Bum,” released by Velvet-Tone Records. 1929: Writes “Sweet Violets.” 1937: Records “Sweet Violets.” 1939: Writes “Take a Ship for Yourself.” 1941: Writes “The Automobile Song.” 1945: Writes “Pincus the Peddler.” Deejay Martin Block plays “Pincus the Peddler” on “The Make Believe Ballroom” on WMCA radio in New York. 1946: Writes “Shaving Cream.” 1950: Writes “Home Again in Israel.” 1966: Writes “Brooklyn Bridge.” 1969: Self-publishes “Show Me,” a book of jokes. 1972: Mentioned in the Songwriters Hall of Fame as co-lyricist of “The Blond Sailor” with Mitchell Parish. 1973: Dr. Demento and Cousin Brucie play “Shaving Cream” on their radio shows. 1975: Interviewed by Cousin Brucie on WNBC radio in New York. 1981: Writes “Without Pants.” 1982: Appears at the Country Club, Reseda, CA with song parodist Weird Al Yankovic and comic Uncle Floyd. 1985: Appears at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. 1986: A video, “Laugh Along with Benny Bell,” is shown on Manhattan Cable. 1993: Appears at Caroline’s Comedy Club in New York. 1994: Molly passes away at age 85. 1999: Benny Bell passes away at age 93.
