简介

Joshua Lanes, the street, cannot be found in Long Beach. It is buried east, in the heart of Yucca Valley and the High Desert. Members from the band Joshua Lanes, however, can be found in Long Beach. If you are lucky, you can find them at The Prospector, charging a mere five dollar cover for their show. The Dance Thunder EP is the latest from Joshua Lanes and the anticipated follow up of Insert at Rib, the bands’ last full length album. It explodes from the speakers of your clock radio. Or perhaps from the bottom of your laptop, or the side door of your Saturn sedan. Where ever you decide to listen to The Dance Thunder EP, it begins with a bang, a pop, a click, a light turning on in the attic. It’s a fast paced song that immediately requires attention, the attention to dance. Joshua Lanes’ title track, “Dance Thunder” is a head bopping, shoe tapping, body bouncing, hand clapping sort of track. “Dance Thunder” doesn’t sound like any song that is already on the radio or any song that is being force-fed to us through the box of our television screen. It doesn‘t sound like the others that have come before Joshua Lanes, or the ones that might come after. Joshua Lanes proves to us their ability to create music that is unique and different- but at the same time, exactly what an audience is looking for. “Theft on the Floor” is an essential Joshua Lanes track and has a sound that emulates previous albums. It sneaks up right between the smooth “Hot Coffee” and the instrument heavy “Slaved and Tame.“ The high energy guitar and drums make this track a fan favorite and live show staple. If you weren’t listening before, you surely will be now. Joshua Lanes has turned music into a family affair. Guitarist and lead singer John, is the oldest of the Anthony children. His younger sister Elisa, and his youngest brother Eric, contribute their musicianship to the EP. Drummer, Carl Guiterrez, breaks the sibling chain. Long time friend and High Desert alumni, Medka Thompson plays bass when Joshua Lanes is on the road. The band themselves, admit that they are the antithesis of rock stars. They instead describe themselves as humble, quiet people. “We just like to play, keep things between our small niche of people, and continue to have fun without letting our egos and grandiose ideas pervert our art,” says John Anthony. In addition to being humble, quiet people, Joshua Lanes have and independent, do-it-yourself attitude. They record and release their albums through their own label, Spillway Records. Spillway is another tribute to the High Desert, being named after a drainage ditch that they skateboarded in. The Dance Thunder EP is a blend of head banging, hair swirling rock and melodic lyrical sensibility. The album has a little something for everyone. Something to dance to, something to rock to, something to drive to, something to think to. It is a Joshua Lanes that has diversified and evolved, moving from a strong metal sound to something a little softer. There seems to be a long and winding road ahead of Joshua Lanes. One that may not lead them utter rock stardom and sold out arena tours, but perhaps back to the doors of The Prospector in Long Beach, and that place is always packed. -KP
