Luigi Boccherini composed two versions of the Stabat Mater. The first, for soprano and string quintet, G.532, was written in 1781 in Las Arenas in Avila by order of the Infante de España Don Luis. The writing of the manuscript of 1781 remained almost unknown until recently. Undoubtedly, Boccherini composed this work under the influence of the most famous and publicized Stabat Mater of the eighteenth century, that of Pergolesi. But Boccherini transcends his model in style and form composing a work in which, above all, presents his characteristic gallant style and a greater elaboration and richness of the interior voices. This Stabat Mater captivates the listener by the intimacy of Boccherini’s musical language which is particularly suited to the contemplative poetry depicting Mary’s anguish during her son’s crucifixion. One could wish for no better performer of this subtle sacred music than the incomparable Cecilia Montemayor; where she gives an interpretation full of sensitivity accompanied by the Ensamble de Cuerdas Monterrey. A truly captivating performance, full of color and emotional moments.
