Vermont singer/songwriter Bob Murray is a troubadour of the soul. On Alligator Tears his rich, tender ballads take you down the road of his life with an intimacy and honesty that is startling at times. Sensitive, but not sentimental, Murray’s slightly gravelly voice is the perfect vehicle for the heartbreak he delivers on this CD. He writes about love mostly, or finding his way back to it, in songs about leaving home, his daughter, his dad, and his dreams. Literally a student of the dream, Murray’s lyrics are often pulled straight from his nighttime forays into the unconscious. A former English teacher and poet, his love of words rises up through his songs as his stories unfurl like banners over his subtle guitar and piano accompaniment. While Alligator Tears may not be as polished as Murray’s later CDs, such as O Boss Man, on which he partners with other talented Vermont musicians, it is a deep and satisfying journey into music straight from the heart. Murray’s star is rising as he finds his way back to the music he left behind as a kid. Cutting your first CD in front of a live audience at age 55 is not for everyone. For Murray it was simply the first step back to where he has always belonged – guitar in hand and a soul full of music. In addition to performing, Bob Murray is a teacher at the North of Eden Center for Archetypal Dreamwork in Montpelier, VT (www.northofeden.com). His course is called Musicality: Vulnerability through Music and offers a unique opportunity for singers at all levels, from seasoned professionals to terrified newbies, to share a safe space in which to explore their voices.
