Forgiving Wind is a unique collaboration between a songwriter’s past and the expansive breath of a new landscape. Vast and plain, captivating and brave, this collection of ten songs was written and recorded entirely in Durban, South Africa, where Jaspar and her husband Kale lived from 2009 to 2011. With Kale on accordion singing sweet tenor harmonies and talented local musicians playing the parts of the banjo, mandolin, dobro, bass, drums, and lead guitar, Jaspar brought her folk/country sound to the Indian Ocean, and the result is a stronger, sadder song with a sound more Americana than ever. While exploring themes of forgotten dreams and relationships that have lost their truth, a distinct feminist voice emerges, one that vacillates between fierce claims to new terrain and quests for forgiveness in leaving the past behind.
