In the Fall of 2013, I launched a Kickstarter Campaign to raise support for a new album, and within three days my friends, family, and strangers I’d never even met joined me in raising all the funds toward what would become Bohemian Woman. I wrote the songs on this album over a period of about six years. A few, like In Oregon, Hillbilly Heroin and The Ways of his Love, I wrote back when I lived in Portland, Oregon. God I love that place. I miss her so. But in the Fall of 2010, I moved away from the beautiful West and my home for 17 years, back to my home state of Florida to start a new life. It took me three years before I actually bought a bed and unpacked a few boxes, though, because I haven’t actually stayed in one place for long lately. The rest of the songs on this album come from a very short period of time between 2012 and 2013, marked by my dad’s passing, my purchase of a $39 mandolin from Amazon.com, and the subsequent overflowing of emotion into songwriting on my new instrument. I think my dad had something to do with the songs I wrote on that mandolin. And he is the reason I made Bohemian Woman. Bohemian Woman isn’t just a musical collaboration, it’s a ride through several years of my life and the people and places who made it so interesting, and represents a period of artistic and personal growth I found along the way. You might be surprised by the many variations in sound on this album as a result, but I hope you’ll enjoy listening to all those stories as much as I’ve enjoyed living them.
