EKITI SON – ‘Gemini Disco’: A skeleton of rhythm – less even, a blueprint – but try and stop yourself moving. A real find, this – gaps and particle trails suggest 2-Step in 4-D but our ears pick up only an abstraction. Taunting and haunting. Freakytigger. I first heard Ekiti Son’s music on an Audio Dregs / Tomlab compilation and was immediately taken with the sweet fusion and blatant charm of the sound. His album ‘Nepotism’ is full of brilliant individual tracks and still manages to work well as an LP. Charming and full of rhythmic and melodic playfulness, it sounds to me like the kind of thing that Rephlex might have released a few years back. Yeah, yeah I know that’s not the most original thing to write but I say it purely because while being mostly electronic the music fuses so many ideas together in a very natural way. It sounds human too which helps to give a lot of the tracks a soulful feel to them. Ekiti Son strikes me as being quite blissfully ignorant of what else is happening elsewhere and is just going for it…long may that continue! Mola.
